One of my most successful Christmas presents for my sons and nephews is a copy of the latest version of the Guinness Book of World Records. Who hasn’t marveled over the tallest, smallest, fastest, and more? Christmas themed records have been part of world record holding since the beginning of world records.
According to current calculations, Porto, Portugal holds the world record for the largest group of Santas (14,200) gathered in December 2008.
Every Santa, or Pai Natal (Father Christmas) as he is known in Portugal, who took part in the parade donated 1 euro to buy presents for the needy children in Porto.
According to the Guinness World Records, the previous world record for the largest gathering of Santas was set in 2007 in Derry City, Northern Ireland, where a total of 12,965 people took part dressed up as Santa or Santa’s helpers.
Porto has held the record before, with over 5,000 marching in 2004. Apparently, a record attempt has been made just about every year. Jeremy and I were musing about attending Santa school. Maybe we’ll settle for participation in a large gathering of Santas.
In my research, I discovered other groups of summer Santas, scuba Santas and naked Santas. I’ll be reporting on some of these oddities in the next few days.
